Amazon is reportedly planning to launch an ad-supported tier on Prime Video

Following the lead of many other streaming platforms, Amazon may be the next company to introduce an ad-supported tier. Amazon Prime Video is reportedly in the beginning stages of creating a new tier where subscribers would automatically get ad-supported content. Users would be asked to pay more for ad-free content. This move is not surprising considering major competitors such as Netflix and Disney+ have recently incorporated ad-supported content to their services. Amazon Prime Video subscriptions currently range from $8.99 to $14.99 per month. A cheaper subscription plan would most likely boost subscribers and help in competing with other major streaming platforms. Other areas of the streaming service already include ads like Thursday Night Football as well as Fire TV channels which include free, ad-supported content on Fire TV devices.

This was an inevitable step for Amazon Prime, as they follow suit with other streaming platforms. From an advertising standpoint, the ability to buy directly through Amazon Prime will likely be coming as well. Following the Hulu model, advertisers will be able to target their consumers to ensure that their ads are being seen in the right location. As streaming services seemingly continue to grow, Amazon adapted to the rest of the market and its competitors.
